When Jesus Gives You The Silent Treatment… (Day Four Matthew 15:23)

But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, “Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us.” (Matthew 15:23 NET)

As any loving mother would be in such a situation, this woman must have been overwhelmed at the thought of her daughter’s death without divine intervention.  Yet her plea to Christ seems to have fallen on deaf ears, for Christ Jesus did not answer her at all. This seems cruel and harsh until you continue to read and find that after prolonged begging, the disciples ask Jesus to send this crazy woman away.  Instead Jesus decides to speak.  In the course of the next few verses Christ says “I can’t help you because you are the wrong race”, then he basically calls her a “dog” and says it would not be right for him to use a miracle on her.  Yet this woman persisted in her pursuit of divine intervention for the young girl who lay dying.  Why would our loving savior push this woman so far, and be so cruel?  I believe it was to show everyone present, and even the world today, that great faith does not give up; it is not deterred by obstacles, setbacks, or disappointments. Honesty would force most of us to admit that our faith has wavered under far less opposition than this woman faced on this day.  As believers we must do everything in our power to insure that our faith is focused, persistent, and tenacious in all circumstances.  Then perhaps we too might one day hear words that are similar to what Jesus eventually said to her “Woman, your faith is great!” I pray that we too would be people of great faith!

we too need to be very insistant about getting him to listen to our crys of help. When we need a healing, rain, just a simple answer about something. How we need to learn from this one womans need and want.

I’ve been pretty hung up on this one. It feels like there had to be something lost in translation.

I’m pretty sure Jesus knew that this woman wouldn’t give up, or He would have handled the situation differently. God knows our limitations, and it almost seems like He goes out of His way to meet us there… and it feels like it’s too late. But it isn’t.

I like to think that this is the spiritual equivalent of the death crawl from “Facing the Giants”. I think He wants us to see that our faith can carry us farther than we thought, and He’s smiling because He knew it all along.
